Wimbledon 2026 Day 8: Arthur Fery stuns Grigor Dimitrov to reach historic quarter-final as Jessica Pegula, Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner prepare for last-eight action

The second week of Wimbledon is where champions are made and fairytale stories come to life, and Day 8 delivered one of the most memorable British moments of the tournament. British wildcard Arthur Fery produced a sensational five-set victory over Grigor Dimitrov to book a place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in his career. Elsewhere, Flavio Cobolli continued his outstanding run, Jasmine Paolini avenged an earlier defeat to Alex Eala, Taylor Fritz quietly strengthened his title credentials and Linda Noskova ended Madison Keys’ campaign. With the quarterfinals now set to begin, anticipation is building for another blockbuster day at the All-England Club. Here, QualityShot tennis journalist Ben Phillips looks into all of day 8’s action, including a monumental win for Britain’s Arthur Fery

Arthur Fery produces the biggest win of his career to reach a dream Wimbledon quarter-final

Arthur Fery has become the surprise story of Wimbledon 2026 after defeating Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in an unforgettable Centre Court battle.

The 23-year-old wildcard, who grew up just around the corner from the All England Club, looked overwhelmed after sealing the biggest victory of his career. Having spent his childhood dreaming of playing on these courts, Fery now finds himself among the final eight at Wimbledon in what has been a remarkable fortnight.

After dropping the second and third sets, many expected the vastly experienced Dimitrov to close the match out. Instead, Fery showed remarkable composure, fighting back to force a deciding set before holding his nerve in a tense final-set tie-break.

The victory represents one of the biggest British upsets at Wimbledon in recent years and continues what has already been a breakthrough season for the young Brit.

Flavio Cobolli continues red-hot form ahead of Arthur Fery clash

Standing between Arthur Fery and an astonishing Wimbledon semi-final is French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli.

The Italian continued the finest run of his career with an impressive 7-5, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Alex de Minaur, displaying the aggressive baseline tennis that has propelled him into the world’s elite over recent months.

Following his victory, we asked Cobolli which aspects of his game have impressed him most during his remarkable rise and where he still believes improvements can be made.

“I think with all my shots I’m really happy,” Cobolli explained. “The serve for me can always be better.”

It is a response that perfectly reflects the confidence currently flowing through the Italian’s game. His groundstrokes have been exceptional throughout the tournament, while his movement and composure under pressure have allowed him to consistently dictate matches against elite opposition.

Although Cobolli will deservedly enter the quarter final as favourite, Arthur Fery has already shown he thrives as the underdog. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Brit will believe another upset is possible against one of the hottest players on the ATP Tour.

Jasmine Paolini avenges Dubai defeat to Alex Eala

Jasmine Paolini booked her place in the quarterfinals after overcoming Alex Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in one of the highest-quality women’s matches of the day.

Eala had defeated the Italian in Dubai earlier in the season, but Paolini arrived at Wimbledon determined to produce a different outcome.

When we asked what she had changed tactically and mentally compared to that previous meeting, Paolini highlighted the importance of her mindset from the opening point.

“I think in Dubai I didn’t approach the match as well,” she said. “Today I had great energy, I was there in every point. I knew it was a tough one; she’s playing really well.”

That mentality was evident throughout the contest. Rather than becoming frustrated after losing the second set, Paolini maintained her intensity and continued applying pressure in the decisive third set.

Her willingness to compete for every point ultimately proved decisive against one of the fastest-rising stars in women’s tennis, and the Italian now finds herself just two victories away from another Grand Slam final.

Taylor Fritz quietly emerging as a genuine Wimbledon title contender

While much of the attention has focused on some of the tournament’s biggest names, Taylor Fritz continues to move through the draw with minimal fuss.

The American defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in another composed display that showcased his growing confidence on grass.

Bublik’s unpredictable style has caused problems for many of the world’s best players, but Fritz never allowed the match to become chaotic. His serving remained consistently strong, while his first-strike tennis prevented Bublik from finding any sustained rhythm.

Fritz may not be attracting the same headlines as Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner, but his performances suggest he is becoming one of the most dangerous players remaining in the tournament.

Having navigated the opening week without expending excessive physical or emotional energy, the American looks well positioned heading into the closing stages of Wimbledon. If he continues serving at this level, few players will relish facing him.

Linda Noskova knocks out Madison Keys

Linda Noskova continued her impressive Wimbledon campaign by defeating Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals.

The young Czech produced another mature performance, absorbing Keys’ power before taking her opportunities in the biggest moments.

Winning the second-set tie-break proved enough to secure victory in straight sets, ending the American’s hopes of another deep Wimbledon run.

Noskova’s fearless approach has made her one of the breakout performers of this year’s championships, and she now heads into the final eight full of confidence.

Wimbledon 2026 quarterfinals begin on Day 9

The quarterfinals get underway on Tuesday with another outstanding schedule awaiting fans.

In the women’s draw, Jessica Pegula takes on Coco Gauff in an all-American showdown featuring two of the biggest hitters on the WTA Tour. Their familiarity with each other’s games should produce a fascinating tactical contest with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Novak Djokovic continues his pursuit of another Wimbledon title against Félix Auger-Aliassime. Djokovic’s experience makes him the favourite, but the Canadian possesses the firepower to test anyone when performing at his best.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner faces Jan-Lennard Struff in another intriguing quarter-final. Struff’s huge serve and aggressive style have troubled elite players throughout his career, but Sinner has looked increasingly comfortable as the tournament has progressed.

The women’s action is rounded off by Naomi Osaka against Karolína Muchová. Osaka has been one of the standout performers of the second week, while Muchová’s variety and creativity promise a fascinating contrast in styles.

With Arthur Fery carrying British hopes into the latter stages, several genuine title contenders finding top form and a packed quarter-final schedule ahead, Wimbledon 2026 continues to deliver unforgettable storylines as the race for the championships enters its decisive phase.
