Great Rafael Nadal Retires

By Florence Baxter

Towards the end of 2024, it came with heartfelt shock for many tennis fans when the tennis great Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from the sport aged 38. This makes him just one year older than his fellow star, Novak Djokovic, who is now the only player from the ‘original Big 3’ remaining on tour.

The news of his retirement was shared personally via Nadal’s social media: an emotional video which touched the hearts of many tennis fans. Reflecting on injury struggles in the last two years, his inspirations, and his strong support networks, Nadal expresses gratefulness for his career and his achievements. Nadal announced that the Davis Cup, towards the end of November 2024, would be the last tournament of his professional career. Here, sporting stars paid tribute to the major tennis and sporting influence as his career goes full circle, with “one of his first joys as a professional tennis player” being playing the Davis Cup final in Sevilla back in 2004.

Winning his first grand slam just two days after his 19th birthday at Roland Garros, it is difficult to give the Spaniard due credit for his career achievements in one article. Regarded as the ‘King of Clay’, the 22-time grand slam champion won over 60% of these titles at the French Open, where he now has a statue of honour to respect his achievements there. As his professional career has drawn to a close, Rafael Nadal secured his position, following the 2024 season, as the player to win the second-most men’s grand slam singles titles of all time, just behind career-long rival, Djokovic (24 titles).

However, with fellow Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, on the rise in the professional tennis world, it falls into question whether Nadal’s achievements will ever be overshadowed by the young player.

Similarly winning his first grand slam at an impressive 19 years of age, rocketing him to his debut as World Number One, if Alcaraz wins the Australian Open later this month, he will become the youngest man in tennis history to complete a career Grand Slam, now aged 21. Although it is a great possibility that Alcaraz may equal, or even exceed, the achievements of Nadal by the time his career draws to a close, I don’t anticipate this undermining Nadal’s legacy. Despite both being Spaniards who have reached the top of the game, arguably with similar playing styles, it is hard to compare the two as they compete in different eras of tennis. As we get progressively further into the open era, the game no longer seems to be dominated by a handful of players who repetitively win titles, like it was in Nadal’s prime. Now, the game appears to be much more open, debatably making it easier for Alcaraz to continue to reach success. Upon Nadal’s retirement, Alcaraz even reflected on how this was tough news for him to hear, with Nadal always being his tennis idol and inspiration from when he was a child.

It is indubitable that Nadal’s career will go down in tennis and sporting history, but this doesn’t stop sporting fans from wondering how he will continue his legacy and influence in the game. Despite retiring as a player, the tennis world still carries plenty of opportunity – so what might the tennis world hold next for Rafa? Nadal already has a popular merchandise range in collaboration with Nike, which I have no doubt will continue to develop and expand over the following years. However, in continuing his legacy, may coaching be on the cards? Even for fellow ex-Grand Slam champion, Andy Murray, who initially ruled out coaching, he has recently taken on a role as Djokovic’s coach, so may Nadal seize an opportunity to coach Alcaraz, if offered. Indubitably, the Spaniards would make a formidable duo, with Rafa’s experience vital in guiding Carlos’ time at the top, and this would be another collaboration for the tennis history books. The young player has always idolised Rafa, and the duo have had the opportunity to share experiences both on and off the court, so it will be interesting to see if their dynamic intensifies into a coach-player relationship any time in the future…
