After four dramatic days of qualifying at Roehampton, attention now turns to the main draw at Wimbledon 2025, which begins on Monday, June 30th. With the top players in the world descending on the All England Club and the lawns freshly trimmed, excitement is building for what could be another unforgettable fortnight.
As ever, the opening round throws up intriguing clashes, returning champions, rising stars, and heavyweight title contenders. Here’s a look at the main matches to look out for in Round 1, along with a breakdown of the routes to the final for some of the tournament favourites.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Fabio Fognini
The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz will open Centre Court proceedings against the colourful and enigmatic Fabio Fognini, now 38 years old. Once ranked as high as world number nine, Fognini remains a dangerous opponent on his day; his touch, creativity, and flair can frustrate even the best. But on the grass, and especially in best-of-five, Alcaraz’s athleticism and shot tolerance should prove too much.
The Spaniard is chasing a third straight Wimbledon title, and the draw won’t make it easy. Potential opponents en route to the final include Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune, and Alexander Zverev, with a likely blockbuster against either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner in the final.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Carson Branstine
World number one Aryna Sabalenka will be keen to make a statement after a rocky end to her French Open campaign. A bruising final loss to Gauff was followed by a criticised post-match speech, and she’ll want to put that behind her quickly.
Her opponent is Carson Branstine, who made headlines by knocking out top seed Lois Boisson in qualifying. Branstine has power and confidence, but Sabalenka is lethal in the early rounds of majors and will be a strong favourite to advance.
If she does, her path doesn’t get easier: Elina Svitolina and Madison Keys, who beat Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, could all stand in her way.
Jannik Sinner vs Luca Nardi
Fresh from lifting the Australian Open trophy earlier this year, Jannik Sinner enters Wimbledon as a top contender. He’ll begin his campaign against fellow Italian Luca Nardi, who possesses a flashy game but hasn’t yet consistently delivered at the Grand Slam level.
Should Sinner get past the opening hurdle, his projected path features Tommy Paul, a possible showdown with Jack Draper, and a quarter-final test against the tricky Lorenzo Musetti. Looming in the final is a potential French Open final rematch against Alcaraz, a rivalry that continues to elevate men’s tennis to new heights.
Coco Gauff vs Dayana Yastremska
Newly crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff comes into Wimbledon brimming with confidence and belief. She opens her campaign against Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, a player capable of going toe-to-toe from the baseline but lacking Gauff’s consistency and mental strength in the key moments.
What lies ahead for Gauff is a nightmare draw. A possible second-round clash with former world number one Victoria Azarenka, followed by a potential quarter-final vs Iga Swiatek, could define her campaign. But the American has proven she thrives under pressure and is now firmly established as one of the sport’s elite.
Novak Djokovic’s Brutal Path
Novak Djokovic arrives at SW19 with history on the line, one more title here and he will stand alone with a record eighth Wimbledon crown. However, his road to the final is as tough as it gets.
He’s projected to face Jack Draper in the Quarter Finals, Jannik Sinner in the Semis, and potentially Carlos Alcaraz in the final. There will be question marks over his fitness if it came to having to play three top opponents in a row. If the Serbian is at full strength, few would bet against him, but he will likely need a bit of luck to win a record 25th Grand Slam title.
Raducanu vs Xu: All-British Battle Promises More Than Meets the Eye
One of the most intriguing first-round matchups on the women’s side comes in the form of an all-British clash between Emma Raducanu and 17-year-old Mingge (Mimi) Xu. On paper, Raducanu, the British No.1 and former US Open champion, will be the strong favourite. She has experience, major pedigree, and a renewed sense of purpose after a much-improved 2025 season.
But to overlook Xu would be a mistake. The Welsh teenager is one of the most exciting prospects in British tennis. Her poise, court awareness and early ball-striking have drawn comparisons to top-tier players well beyond her years. Despite her youth, Xu has been quietly making waves on the ITF and junior circuits, and her qualification for the main draw has already marked a significant step in her career.
Raducanu, who knows a thing or two about bursting onto the Grand Slam scene as a teenager, will be mindful of the threat Xu poses. Matches between compatriots often come with added pressure and familiarity, which could make this contest less predictable than rankings might suggest.
For Xu, this is a free hit with everything to gain, a chance to test herself on one of tennis’ biggest stages against a national hero. For Raducanu, it’s a chance to start her Wimbledon campaign with purpose, but she’ll need to handle the moment with the same calm authority she’s rediscovered this season.
Either way, British fans can look forward to a compelling showdown and perhaps a glimpse at the future of Welsh tennis in Mimi Xu.
The Stage Is Set
With familiar legends, dangerous floaters, and new contenders all drawn into compelling first-round matches, Wimbledon 2025 looks set to deliver another classic fortnight of tennis. The draw has thrown up challenges for most of the top seeds, which should make for drama right from day one.
