Wimbledon Day 7: Osaka stuns Sabalenka as Djokovic and Sinner march on

Day six at Wimbledon produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament as Naomi Osaka defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 to book her place in the quarter-finals. Having lost to Sabalenka several times already this season, Osaka produced one of her finest performances in recent years, overpowering the Belarusian with fearless, aggressive tennis. Here, QualityShot tennis journalist Ben Phillips looks into a day of tennis that ensured we would have a new women’s Wimbledon  champion for the tenth year in a row.

After the match, we asked Osaka how she managed to reverse the recent trend against Sabalenka, both tactically and mentally.

“Tactically there’s only so much you can do against her. Obviously we’re big ball strikers and I think from my end it’s not like I’m going to be running around the court trying to draw an error from her.”

The response perfectly summed up Osaka’s approach. Rather than attempting to adapt her game to counter Sabalenka, she trusted the weapons that have made her a four-time Grand Slam champion. It was a confident display built on belief in her own strengths, allowing her to dictate the majority of the rallies and secure one of the standout victories of the championships.

Djokovic continues pursuit of another Wimbledon crown

Novak Djokovic also advanced with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Roman Safiullin. The seven-time Wimbledon champion was tested throughout the contest but once again found his highest level in the crucial moments.

Following the match, we asked Djokovic about the role recovery technology now plays in extending his career.

“The amount of time I spend recovering now is higher than ever due to the demands of my body. Throughout my career I’ve always looked into what could give me an edge.”

The Serbian continues to evolve every aspect of his preparation, and his commitment to recovery is clearly paying dividends as he remains one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

Sinner and Pegula safely through

Defending champion Jannik Sinner continued his impressive title defence with a straight-sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory over qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki. While the Japanese player produced moments of brilliance, Sinner’s consistency and power proved too much as the Italian booked another place in the second week.

Jessica Pegula also progressed after recovering from a slow start against teenage American Iva

Jovic. After dropping the opening set, Pegula responded superbly to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, showing her experience and composure to move into the quarter-finals.

Marathon matches entertain the crowds

Two of the day’s longest contests kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

Félix Auger-Aliassime came through an epic five-set battle against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, eventually prevailing 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 after over four hours of high-quality tennis.

Jan-Lennard Struff also advanced in dramatic circumstances after Hubert Hurkacz was forced to retire while trailing 4-2 in the deciding set. It was a cruel end to an absorbing contest, with Hurkacz unable to continue despite pushing the match deep into a fifth set.

A new women’s champion guaranteed

Karolína Muchová ended the title defence of Barbora Krejčíková to ensure Wimbledon will crown a new women’s singles champion for the tenth consecutive year.

It is a remarkable statistic and highlights just how difficult sustained success on grass can be. The unique demands of the surface, combined with the depth of the women’s game, continue to produce fresh champions year after year.

Looking ahead to Day 8

The fourth-round action continues tomorrow with several fascinating matches on the schedule. Taylor Fritz faces the unpredictable Alexander Bublik in what promises to be an entertaining battle of big serving and attacking tennis.

British hopes will rest with Arthur Fery as he takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the biggest match of his career, while Alex de Minaur meets Flavio Cobolli in another intriguing contest with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
